Spring into action… and new ideas

Happy first day of Spring 2019!!! Spring is universally seen as a time of rebirth, renewal and regrowth… a time when the cold of Winter is behind us and warmer days are to come. Another interesting fact about March 20th is that in 1852 Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, was first published and it changed the course of American history. These two events are related in theme – if Spring is the idea of rebirth and renewal, then the reaction to and importance of Uncle Tom’s Cabin was a rebirth – a new way for many Americans to look at the issue of Slavery in the 1800’s.

As business owners and people, we need to take a page from the life of Harriet Beecher Stowe. She was a staunch abolitionist, who shed light on the horrors of slavery through her writings. Abraham Lincoln famously quipped “So you’re the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war”, upon meeting her. Imagine that a woman from Litchfield, CT was able to effect great change through the expression of her ideas and beliefs in print. No matter what our industry or field of interest, our ideas and words have power. We only need to voice them, market them and let them be known for success to follow.

Spring, as noted, is a time of renewal. So, I encourage you all to dust off those ideas that you may have discarded or do some spring cleaning and revive some old dreams. By acting like Mrs. Stowe and taking advantage of the renewing power of spring, we can start on the path to making our visions reality.
