As I was driving home from work today, the song “Running Down a Dream” by Tom Petty was on the radio. It struck me as being particularly apropos for this Monday October 8th. As the lyrics go, running down a dream, that never would come to me, working on a mystery, going wherever it leads, running down a dream – it seemed like it represented a start-up businesses journey in the infancy stages.
The past 5 months have been quite akin to “going wherever it leads” for Bedford Street Marketing. From the creation of the LLC to the building of the brand image, it has certainly been a mystery. But an amazing mystery, like a really good mystery novel where you can’t put the book or kindle down.
I started out with a vision of having a standard brand image for a marketing firm. As the months rolled on, it became apparent that standard equaled bland and wasn’t going to stand out. A more idiosyncratic approach was needed – something unique, something that made people notice. The odd thing about being unique and sometimes posting non sequitur content – it attracts a much wider audience and generates a lot more comments and likes. I am still amazed at how a post about National Inner Beauty day can outperform a generic marketing themed post – but it does. The more original and “wacky” the post – the more people related to it. It reminds me of the quote below from Alice in Wonderland. It appears that Lewis Carroll knew something we are still learning today – All the best people are a bit bonkers!!!!

The main reason the song hit home today was a lead is on it’s way to a conversion. Now I don’t want to jinx myself – but running down that dream, that never would come to me…. may have started to slow down a bit!!! It’s an odd feeling of excitement and fear. The excitement of seeing hard work pay off, but fear that now the pressure is truly on. It’s in the moment when you are fearful, that leaders emerge and others run away. And I, dear readers, am not running away but embracing this opportunity!!!!

Well, that’s it for tonight. Hope you all had Columbus Day off and enjoyed a great long weekend!!!!
